Cook House is the restaurant where we imagined we'd like to hang out.
Casual, all day dining, focused on food, but most of all hospitable and convivial.
Cook House began life as a recipe blog and supper club, my first steps in escaping a job in architecture which I didn’t really love. Self taught, I embarked on a journey from ‘pay what you think’ supperclubs and one off location specific dinners to Cook House 1.0, via time at London restaurants Quo Vadis and Rochelle Canteen.
Originally housed in two converted shipping containers overlooking Newcastle’s Ouseburn river, Cook House was born of a straightforward idea. A simple, open space where guests were in the kitchen, the food was delicious and the experience was always warm and welcoming.
Cook House’s first incarnation received plenty of attention and some acclaim - our biggest thrill, making the Good Food Guide in 2016 as one of the top 25 new entries. The restaurant has been in the guide every year since.
All good things come to an end…but if you’re lucky they come back even better.
The container doors closed on Ouse Street for the last time in November 2018.
One month and much graft later Cook House reopened bigger and better, but just as convivial in our new home down the road on Foundry Lane.
Two floors, a dining terrace, shop, garden, plans for bees on the roof, Grazer HQ MARK II is the Ouseburn’s food location. The kitchen is still at the heart of Cook House, open to our upstairs dining room and ready to welcome you from the front door. The regularly changing menu is seasonal, our produce and suppliers are local and we strive to be ethical in everything we do.
Most of all Cook House is still a place we want to hang out.
